The fundamental tasks of catechesis are: (From the General Directory for Catechesis #85)
- Promoting knowledge of the faith
- Sacraments and full, active, conscious participation in the liturgy
- Moral formation
- Teaching to pray
- Education for community life
- Growing a missionary spirit to spread the faith and help the poor
The Catechetical Ministry program here at the Church of the Resurrection is a school of apprenticeship where the apprentices of Jesus are formed in their faith so that they may go forth as disciples in the world witnessing and proclaiming the Good News in word and deed.

The Catechetical Program at Resurrection parish partners with parents to help them in their role as the primary catechists (teachers) of their children/youth. The program offers support and opportunities in order for parents to carry out this role. The Catechetical Sessions for Kindergarten through Junior High begin in September and end in May. Students are automatically reregistered for the following year. Please see the time and fee schedule on the calendars to the right for more information. Children’s Liturgy of the Word
“The presentation of the Gospels should be done in such a way as to elicit an encounter with Christ and respond to God’s call in our life.” General Directory for Catechesis #24B
At the Sunday masses the parish offers Children’s Liturgy of the Word where the Sunday readings are broken open for the children at their level. Children’s Liturgy of the word is for all children of the parish Grades 1-5 at the 10:00 am Sunday mass.
“The liturgical life of the Church revolves around the sacraments, with the Eucharist at the center. “The sacraments are efficacious signs of grace, instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church,” by which divine life is given to us and celebrated.” National Directory for Catechesis #35
Preparation for First Reconciliation, First Eucharist, Confirmation, and Baptism for children age seven and older, is included as part of the ongoing Catechetical process. Parent sessions, assist parents in preparing their children for the sacraments while helping them grow in their own faith and understanding of Sacraments. The children are prepared through catechetical sessions, retreat experiences and opportunities for service. Candidates for the sacraments must be registered in the Catechetical Ministry program and Parish School for a minimum of two consecutive years including the year the sacrament is celebrated.
First Reconciliation & First Eucharist
First Reconciliation and First Eucharist are celebrated in second grade. In addition to the regular registration fee there is a $50.00 fee to cover the cost of supplies.
Sacramental Preparation for Older Students
Those children/youth in the third grade and above who would like to celebrate First Reconciliation and First Eucharist are also enrolled in the Sacramental Preparation Program for Older Students. Parent sessions, assist parents in preparing their children for the sacraments while helping them grow in their own faith and understanding of Sacraments. The children are prepared through catechetical sessions, retreat experiences and opportunities for service. In addition to the regular registration fee there is a $50.00 fee to cover the cost of supplies.
Confirmation is celebrated in the eighth grade. Students must be registered in the Catechetical Ministry program a minimum of two consecutive years including the year the sacrament is celebrated. In addition to the regular registration fee there is a $75.00 fee to cover the cost of the Confirmation retreat and supplies.
Baptism of Children Age Seven and Older
Children who are age seven and older who have not yet been baptized take part in the Rite of Christian of Adults (RCIA) adapted for children. Preparation and celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist take place during the Catechetical calendar year.
